Students Run Philly Style
Students Run Philly Style is the only program in Philadelphia that offers marathon training to help youth succeed in life.
Since 2004, Students Run Philly Style has served over 2500 students, ages 12-18, from neighborhoods across Philadelphia.
Through the leadership of over 200 adult mentors, called Running Leaders over 50 schools, recreation centers and community leaders will host Students Run Philly Style teams this year.
Students train side-by-side with their mentors three days a week from March to November. Along the way, they complete eight road races, and engage in leadership and character development.
Students Run Philly Style partners with Child Advocates every year at our Annual Bar Association 5K Run/Walk, and this year 550 children ran.

Lessons from a child's death
By Frank P. Cervone and Philip V. Scribano
The tragic death of 6-year-old Khalil Wimes can inform efforts to improve Philadelphia's child-welfare system. The case showed that judges end up making life-and-death decisions about child placement without sufficient information; that parents with long histories with the city's Department of Human Services can regain custody of children as easily as one-time offenders; and, most obviously, that neighbors and others who should serve as the first line of protection often fail to report suspected abuse.
In Khalil's case, there were four critical junctures where the outcome might have been changed.

33rd Annual Philadelphia Bar Association 5K Run/Walk
May 20, 2012
On the heels of this year's successful Philadelphia Bar Association's 5K Run/Walk, the Support Center for Child Advocates wants to thank the many law firms, corporate sponsors, participants and volunteers whose generosity, support and dedication helped make this a record year.
On Sunday, May 20, over 1500 runners and walkers of all ages gathered in the bright sunlight on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive adjacent to the Philadelphia Museum of Art for this 33rd annual charity event. All proceeds go to benefit the abused and neglected children of Philadelphia served by Child Advocates.
We had great participation by the youth from Students Run Philly Style - over 500 runners! It was a sight to see these young athletes in their blue team shirts making their way down the course.
Another highlight each year is the Kid's Dash sponsored by our friends at Buchanan Ingersoll. Runners, ages between 5 and 10 years old, made a dash for the finish line, cheered on by family and friends. It's a way for children to have fun and learn about charity and giving back, too!
For the Philadelphia Bar Association, the Bar Run is an opportunity to spotlight its concern for the welfare of the children of Philadelphia. For Manny Pokotilow, race director since its inception in 1980, and a partner at Caesar, Rivise, Bernstein, Cohen & Pokotilow, it is "the best day of the year."
Many thanks to all of our sponsors who rallied to support us at the annual Bar Run. We couldn't have done it without you!

Thanks to our Funders
Child Advocates has been the fortunate recipient of many generous grants and contributions from foundations and corporations in our current fiscal year. We are delighted to announce a significant $39,000 general operating grant that we were awarded in recognition of our status as a high-performing agency! Our thanks go out to The Philadelphia Foundation for this honor. The Philadelphia Foundation has been a longtime friend of Child Advocates work and that of hundreds of organizations with worthy causes like ours. Our community would simply not be the same without them, nor would we. We deeply appreciate their support and all they do for those in need throughout the Philadelphia area. |
Interns in Action
For many people, summer is all about trips to the beach, ice cream and baseball game. At the Support Center for Child Advocates, the summer means one thing - interns ! These interns provide valuable services to our organization and help with projects that shape our future. In return, our goal is to provide them with a valuable work related experience.
Welcome!

Annual Toy Drive
Saturday December 22, 2012
For the kids we serve, the holidays are difficult. Some may be hurting, some may be in an unfamiliar home. The only gifts many of our boys and girls will receive come through the Child Advocates Toy Drive.
You can help make the holiday special for children who have been abused and neglected.
For almost two decades, we have been delivering toys to every child we serve and all children living in the home. Last year, we delivered to over 940 children! Join us and change the story for so many boys and girls.
