A Day at The Stables! The 35 Wishes Project Continues to Brighten The Lives of Children
On October 13th, as part of our 35 Wishes project, child client Tommy, his advocate, Child Advocates Board President Kathy Jaffari and Child Advocates Social Worker Milagros Roca went to Out of Reach Farm in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The farm graciously donated horses and trainers to grant this very special wish.
Tommy had always been fascinated with horses and has a huge collection of toy horses at his foster home. He longed for the day he would actually get to ride and interact with these magnificent animals.
When the group arrived at Out of Reach Farm, attendant Maria Trongo showed Tommy how to ride a horse. The group also toured the stables and were able to meet and groom the horses!
Thank you to everyone that helped make Tommy's wish come true. Remember, if you would like to help us grant a wish please click HERE.

Not everyone is looking forward to the holidays. At least 90% of our kids come from families who are living below the poverty line.
The only gifts they will receive come through our Toy Drive.
YOU CAN HELP IN MANY WAYS...
Coordinate a Child Advocates Toy Drive at work, among friends and family, at your child's school, or at your church or synagogue. We will send you the names and ages of children - you tell us how many - on labels that can be distributed to your donors. We suggest a minimum of 10 children. When you're done, you can deliver the toys to us or we'll make arrangements to pick them up.
Buy gifts for our children (Birth to 21). toys and clothes for all ages are welcome! We especially need gifts for teenagers. Gift cards are an easy thing to give to this age group and our teens love them! (Ideas: CVS, Target, Wal-Mart, movie theaters, Foot Locker, Bath & Body Works, Modell's, Five Below, etc.)
"Sponsor" a needy family or teen on a larger scale.
Pick up toys at various Center City and suburban locations.
Help us sort and bag toys in preparation for delivery.
Deliver toys to our kids. It's a heartwarming activity and lots of fun! Delivery Day is Saturday, December 22, 2012. We begin delivering gifts at 8:00am.
Together, we'll change the story.

Apply Today for the Stoneleigh Fellowship at Child Advocates!
What Is the Stoneleigh Fellowship?
The Stoneleigh Fellowship is designed to support researchers, practitioners, and policymakers who have demonstrated leadership in child welfare, juvenile justice, or related fields. We are particularly interested in individuals whose fellowship proposal involves work that crosses systems or enhances the coordination of service delivery.
Who we are looking for.
Child Advocates seeks to advance its important work in developing outcomes measures for whole-child representation of child victims of abuse and neglect through study and analysis of agency case data, review of other data collection models, and exploration of potential applications of our database by other colleague organizations. We propose the following tasks for a one-year fellowship project:
1. Develop and analyze data from the case management software to advance our understanding of and the policy implications of advocacy for education, behavioral health and other measures of child well-being.
2. Determine whether small subsets of practice data or case characteristics could be considered key predictors of participant outcomes.
3. Gather feedback directed towards Version 2 of the case management software.
4. Study case management and outcomes measurement developments around the nation.
5. Study the feasibility of adapting and marketing our case management software solution for use by other agencies.
The Fellow will develop a report detailing the analysis of the data to assess changes in the system, a set of recommendations for developing version 2, and practice changes (including training, advocacy, etc.) to strengthen outcomes for representation of the children.
What is the Award?
The Stoneleigh Fellowship award is flexible and tailored to the needs of each successful applicant. The amount of the financial award will depend on the personal circumstances of each fellow and project. Awardees are expected to devote full time to the Stoneleigh Fellowship. Therefore, each award typically includes salary, benefits, and a small stipend to cover project-related travel goals. For some fellows based in academic institutions, the award covers a portion of their time.

Meet the Advocate: Sid Klein

(Sid pictured with his son Howard, supporting Movember!)
Two years ago, after meeting with longtime friend and former Board President, Len Bernstein, Sid Klein decided he wanted to get involved with Child Advocates and soon started volunteering at our office twice a week. Sid says he "does whatever is needed to allow everyone to do their jobs." He provides support to staff as they prepare for events, court hearings, trainings, etc.
Sid's passion for Child Advocates is only matched by his passion for food! Sid considers himself a "foodie" and loves all types of cuisine. "Italian, Chinese, Korean, French, Mongolian, South African, you name it, I'll eat it!" He is also a major history buff and loves reading about the Civil War era. When Sid is not reading, he enjoys a good game of pinochle or poker.
Sid is currently participating in Movember for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month with his two sons. They have been growing beards and mustaches to raise awareness for a great cause.
This holiday season Sid is looking forward to spending time with his wife Debbie and the rest of his family. He is also looking forward to seeing how many toys the Child Advocates Toy Drive collects. He encourages many of his friends and neighbors to join in and help out. Sid is confident this year's Toy Drive will be even bigger and better than last year with increased support from the Philadelphia community.
Sid has been a wonderful Child Advocates volunteer encouraging friends, family and neighbors to volunteer their time, participate in our events, and to donate toys for our Toy Drive!
