Child Advocates
Executive Director
Frank Cervone
testified before
the United States Senate Subcommittee on Children and Families in Washington, D.C. at a
hearing titled “Breaking the Silence on Child Abuse: Protection, Prevention, Intervention,
and Deterrence.” Senator
Bob Casey
invited Frank to speak at this first federal examination
of child abuse laws after recent child abuse allegations surfaced at institutions across the
country. Frank shared his unique perspective on trends in child protection and suggested
changes to laws relating to abuse reporting, investigation and service.
During the Penn State child abuse allegations in 2011, WXPN’s “Kid’s Corner” called upon
Child Advocates
to address sexual abuse on the children’s radio show.
Tracey Thomasey
,
Director of Social Work, was featured in this incredible one hour show with host
Kathy
O’Connell
. Tracey spoke about a variety of methods for protecting children, including
teaching them how to distinguish between when an adult wants to share a surprise with
them or have them keep a secret. She also discussed training children how to speak
properly so that adults can understand if they’re trying to disclose important information.
The show became a great resource for parents and children, teaching them how to arm
themselves in the fight against child abuse. A podcast is available on the “Kids Corner”
website at kidscorner.org/html/endingabuse.php
In 2012 Tracey was featured again on “Kid’s Corner” in a call-in show about bullying. One
child caller spoke about the steps she took to get someone to stop bullying her, and one
boy talked about his creation of an anti-bullying club. Tracey helped explain to children
what bullying is and assured them it is okay to let someone know if they are being bullied.
