The
Annual Benefit Reception & Auction
was again a success! Each year we bring the
community together to recognize the tireless dedication and hard work
Child Advocates
have put
in to help abused and neglected children. The evening also celebrates all of the lives changed
thanks to their devotion.
We acknowledge leadership in child advocacy with the Judge Lois G. Forer Child Advocacy
Award. On April 18, 2012, we presented the award to
Dr. Marciene S. Mattleman
, President of
After School Activities Partnerships and Education Reporter for KYW Newsradio. And, on April
10, 2013, we honored
Mark Solomon
for his commitment to providing quality education for
children in the foster care system and his support of youth at risk. The honorees both share
Judge Forer’s unwavering dedication to youth in crisis.
Each year, between 800 and 900 attendees enjoy a lively cocktail party at the Crystal Tea Room
in the Wanamaker Building. Guests enjoy bidding on over 400 items, including sports tickets and
memorabilia, exclusive getaways, dining experiences, unique collectibles, art and jewelry.
An exciting live auction and a moving awards ceremony are the highlights of the evening.
In 2013 we were thrilled to be able to benefit
Arise Academy Charter School
with a portion
of our proceeds. We are deeply grateful to have such devoted Co-Chairs and Event Committee
Members that have led us to raise $460,000 in 2012, and in 2013 we blew that out of the water
with $625,000!
Big thanks to all our Chairs:
Beth Hanssens
(’12 & ‘13),
Rosemarie Hoslyn
(‘12),
Matt Siegel
(’12
& ‘13),
Dena Goldberg
(‘13),
Morey Goldberg
(‘13) and
Suzanne Root
(‘13), we couldn’t have
done it without you!
We also recognized exemplary friends and allies with the Distinguished Advocates Award.
The following people were honored:
BAR ASSOCIATION 5K RUN/WALK
In each of the past two years, over 1,500 runners came together on Martin Luther
King, Jr. Drive for our
Annual Philadelphia Bar Association 5K Run/Walk
. Children and
adults joined together to walk and run to benefit children in our care that have suffered
abuse and neglect. We always enjoy seeing so many youth runners from
Students
Run Philly Style
on the course. Over two years, the event raised more than $180,000
from participants and generous sponsors. We deeply appreciate the support of the
Philadelphia Bar Association
for supporting our work. A special thanks goes to
Manny
Pokotilow
,
Eric Marzluf
and
Michael Berkowitz
of
Caesar, Rivise, Bernstein, Cohen &
Pokotilow
for their inspired leadership in planning such a memorable and successful
event year after year.
CHILD ADVOCATES GOLF CLASSIC
At our annual
Child Advocates Golf Classic,
we continued our partnership with
Cleantech
Alliance Mid-Atlantic (CAMA)
to Go ‘Green’ on the Greens! We have been thrilled to
unite with another great cause, clean energy, to support the kids in our care. Hosted at
Huntingdon Valley Country Club, the Golf Classic brings together golfers from all over to
play for kids with severe or chronic medical needs. Proceeds from the event help us fund
our
Project for Medically Needy Children
.
In October 2011 and 2012, we raised over $112,000 at our golf outing. Thank you to our
wonderful golfers and sponsors; we were overjoyed to see our number of golfers grow
from 128 to 140 in 2012! A special thanks goes to our Golf Classic Committees, especially
Chairs
Anthony Stover
(‘11),
A. Nicole Friant
(’11 & 12) and
Michael Verrill
(‘12).
HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE
We are proud to announce that our
Holiday Toy Drive
, supported by
The Independence
Foundation
, was once again a huge success as we were able to bring holiday spirit to over
1,000 children! On December 17, 2011, 80 drivers personally delivered bags of toys and
clothes to our child clients. On December 22, 2012, 90 drivers did the same, allowing us
to reach over 400 homes both years!
Thank you to everyone who donated and made the holidays special for these children as
we raised over $12,000 each year. Both delivery days were extremely joyful as our drivers
were able to personally make such deserving children smile.
